Butterfly valve DN 3500 for a Norwegian power plant

Reference / Water Supply Engineering

In a new 100 MW hydraulic power plant located in Rendalen, Norway, a butterfly valve with a nominal size of DN 3500 was installed into a pipeline that is 140 metres long and has a diameter of 3.8 metres. It was constructed near the current power plant, which has been operational since 1971.

The butterfly valve has a very high flow rate of 60 m3/s when fully open, which is exceptional for Czechia at the time of installation. The valve weight's calculated values break records: the butterfly valve with lever and counterweight weighs a total of 35 tonnes!

Because the butterfly valve has large parameters, we needed to use the Simulation Works program to perform several calculations. According to the Calculation Engineer Mr. Jiří Halfar, they had to submit calculations that precisely met the customer's requirements.

The customer placed particular emphasis on a low flow resistance coefficient, so we designed the butterfly valve disc to achieve the required values and substantiated it with calculations.

To ensure high quality throughout the process, we made precise calculations and analyses to optimize the flow, strength and hydrodynamic functionalities of the valve.
