Safety is more than physical – it’s also about how work feels

On April 28, the World Day for Safety and Health at Work highlights the importance of safe and healthy working conditions worldwide. This year’s theme focuses on the psychosocial working environment, drawing attention to how people feel, communicate, and cope with the demands of their work.
At Vexve, this perspective is closely linked to our Safety Vision and Local Safety Road Maps. Together, they guide our approach to safety by addressing not only physical risks, but also the factors that influence how people perform in their daily work. The Road Maps are based on Safety Culture Analysis conducted across our units by an external third party ICG Innotiimi. This analysis assessed the relationship between workplace incidents and company culture, helping to identify strengths as well as areas for improvement.
Understanding and managing psychosocial risks
In a demanding manufacturing environment, safety has traditionally focused on preventing physical injuries. While this remains essential, experience shows that many incidents are also influenced by workload, time pressure, fatigue, or unclear communication. These factors can affect concentration, decision-making, and eventually lead to injuries.
That’s why one of Vexve’s focus areas for this year is the psychosocial aspects of work in 2026. This includes developing tools for supervisors to assess psychosocial risks and better manage cognitive load and stress in day-to-day work within our teams in the offices and in production alike.
Towards a proactive and caring safety culture
In addition to traditional safety indicators, we are increasingly focusing on proactive measures such as safety observations and employee participation. These reflect the strength of Vexve’s safety culture and provide valuable insight into everyday working conditions. Our ambition is to move from reactive approach to truly caring culture – an organisation where people look out for each other, speak up without hesitation, and feel supported in their work.
By developing both physical and psychosocial aspects of the working environment, Vexve aims to create conditions where employees can stay focused, feel supported, and perform their work safely. Because in the end, safety is not only about preventing incidents, but also about ensuring that work is well designed and supports people in performing their tasks effectively and safely.
